SPUDS!

Tucked away in the corner of our field, we've been growing some bags of potatoes. It's been such an easy and simple way for us to grow spuds, all they needed was topping up with soil and a little bit of water now and then. We haven't had to worry about rabbit proofing them, and the hens haven't been pecking around them either.

At last potato harvest day has arrived, and we can see what's been going on inside those bags for the last few months. After some frantic foraging we found our first spud. We then tipped the bags out onto the grass and let the children race to gather them up. We grew 3 varieties, new, baking and red, and they all did well.

Much praise and patting on the back took place as we admired our spuds, and wheeled them round to the kitchen. Not bad for our first attempt.

After the official tasting we were feeling very pleased with ourselves indeed.

Although I did have to remind the children that it's rude to play with your food!

Tut- tut x.

Ooo smashing! You can't beat your own homegrown spuddies. We've loved growing our own but with moving to another house on the cards and no soil to grow in we were thinking we'd have to give up. But after seeing how your 'bagged' spuds turned out maybe there's hope for us yet.

Bon appetit, Bertie! x

It's only rude to play with food if the food's not rude!!

Lovely potatoes, and a brilliant idea growing them in bags.

Enjoy.

I've just planted some of those up for Autumn cropping ones, and I'm pleased to see they work so well. I'm all for encouraging children to play with their food if it ends up looking like that!!

What a brilliant and completely new to me idea of growing potatoes in a bag. I immediately made a note to remember it for next spring. I always regret having no large potatoe field because it´s very hard to get good potatoes of the old sorts here at the market, although Bavarian cooking usally needs a lot of them, for salads or roasted as side dish. Oh my, I am so excited now about your bags and I so much could imagine how yummy and delicious your homegrown spuds are.
Thanks for this wonderful hint,
with my best wishes,
Suzi

Oh, and I completely forgot to ask: are this special bags or the usual ones for garden leaves and so. And have you made holes in their bottom for the rain to pour through?
Thank you!

Homegrown spuds are the best! My husband said they tasted so much more earthier! (I had to remind him that we dont wash ours in some awful chemical treated water when dug up!)
Enjoy the fruits of your labour!

Your homegrown potatoes look delicious and I'm sure they taste delicious. Ours are not quite ready for digging up yet, but the day is coming. I hope they're not full of slugs!
I like the little man your children made! It IS a man, isn't it (LOL)

Super idea! How many bags did you have to use to get that crop? We have awful problems with rabbits but this is a fabulous solution. YUM!
