Getting ready for Autumn!

Looking out at the grey sky today, you could easily think we were in the midst of winter. Where has the sunshine gone?

With this in mind we've been getting ready for the colder months. We have freezing winters up here on the moors with very strong winds, so we need to be prepared.

We built a log store when we first moved in two years ago, and had a stove fitted. But the time has come for a new and improved model.

We pulled the old store down and got a pleasant surprise. This nest was hidden in amongst the logs.

I've placed it on my hall dresser, and tucked a little egg inside.

We now have two wood burning stoves, and try to use them as much a possible. Our central heating and Aga run on oil, and are very expensive to use. So the more wood we can utilise, the better for us, and the environment.

We gather wood all year long from our own land, friends and families. We have taken trees down from peoples gardens, and kept the wood as payment.

We have a large store where logs are left to season for a couple of years. Then they are chopped, and brought up to the house when ready to burn.

Ta Dah

Our new log store, designed and made by my lovely D. A man of many talents.

He has even added a little kindling bay, and taught our five year old how to chop the kindling with an axe. She's really good at it too, closely supervised of course.

D has done a fantastic job. Now that I've seen how good his joinery skills are, we have started a much needed, little girls bedroom make over. I'm looking forward to sharing that with you.

I know it's wrong to wish the days away, but I can't wait to be snuggled up in front of the stove. Remembering all the hard work, and effort that has gone into keeping us warm and cosy.

Ummmm x.

Hi Bertie,

Such a lovely cosy post! And what a clever DH you have there.

I have to say autumn and even part of winter are my favourite months, and that beautiful fire you have there looks wonderful to cosy up to. seems mad really when we are supposed to be roasting outside in the sun at this present time.

Look forward to seeing your girls bedroom makeover, I am sure it will be stunning.

Must admit we've been tempted to light the stove these past few chilly nights. Such a satisfying feeling to have a store of logs seasoning for the winter, like filling the freezer or making loads of jam. But I don't want to think of winter yet, I'd like a bit more summer.

Hi Bertie,

I know exactly how you feel. It is definitely starting to feel like Autumn - already and being prepared is always a good thing.

We always spend the summer preparing for the winter as despite the coastal location the wind is bitter here - something to do with the North Sea!

Love the log store - what a talented hubby you have. I would definitely use that to your advantage!!

Have a lovely day,

Nina x

Very nice woodstore! Looks like a good professional job, you've got a joiner there!
We use our woodburning stove instead of the central heating, it works a treat, and we love being tucked up infront of the fire. We have sun here today, so I have irrational high hopes for some summer, autumn can wait a bit longer!

Like a squirrel gathering its nuts! I think you are certainly in for a cosy one this year eh?! Hmm...warm fire...why does that appeal right now so much in the middle of summer?! xxx

We are always on the hunt for wood too as our Central Heating and AGA run on oil and it costs a fortune. As I dont have a separate oven, it means my AGA is switched on constantly and never turned off even in Summer. I am going to show Mr K your wood store as I have been asking for one for the past 4 years and I still havnt got one!!! We have his 'n' hers axes that would look quite sweet propped side by side against the log pile (IF I HAD ONE MR K) LOL! Lovely post! X

What a fantastic log store, and the kindling bay is a brilliant idea. My log store is not a patch on that, just pallets on the floor of the barn for the wood to sit on and a big Travis Perkins delivery bag full of kindling, maybe next year LH will build us a super duper one like yours.

How snug! Do you really live THAT close to the sea? What a blessing! I have found myself anticipating fall, too. When the leaves change color here, it's an artist's visual feast! We don't have a pretty stove like you do, but we use our fireplace and the smell of the wood burning is heavenly, isn't it? Lovely photographs! Thank you for sharing.

It's still nice and warm down south Bertie. However, I have noticed that several of the ash trees have yellowing leaves and orange berries already.

your stove looks fab our gas fire broke last winter and we've bitten the bullet and decided on having real heat this winter. we are trying to find out if our chimney breast is lined so that we can have a stove if not we'll have an open fire either way it will be much cosier and prettier than the 1970's gas fire we've been used too. Lovely post.

We've had fall-like weather here too. Actually, I've heard that our weather is similar to that of the UK. It's presently 66 degrees F outside...a degree warmer than the house.

Your wood storage is wonderful!
