Hello friends, it's a really beautiful day here today, and it's a good job as we're busy getting ready to host a bonfire party on Saturday.
It's coming along nicely.
We're using old wooden pallets, and hedge trimmings, anything really that we can get our hands on.
We have plenty tucked away in the food store, to throw on as the night progresses. Lots of straw bales for bottoms to sit on, huddled around the fire. I do hope it stays mild and dry. On my wander around I was pleased to see the wild flowers still in bloom, and I wanted to show you something pretty before the next picture.
I didn't envisage ever posting a picture of a porta loo on here, but there you go. We've hired them for the evening, so that we don't have muddy wellies walking through the house. They're quite nice inside actually.
On the night I'm in charge of feeding and watering, whilst D is handling all the manly jobs, involving fire and big bangs. I'm not looking forward to slicing all these onions, I think waterproof mascara is definitely needed. We will be serving our home reared sausages and roast pork. Yes the pigs have now gone.
It has been an experience, and I have been reading Hugh's book a lot recently. It has re assured me that we have done the right thing. If you are going to eat meat, you might as well eat from an animal that has had the best possible life, and ours certainly have. Or better still rear your own, I'll say no more.
Yes we are very excited to be hosting our first ever bonfire night.
If you are celebrating tonight, I wish you a safe and happy evening x.

Believe it or not, I have never been to one! It's not something I did as a child being a Catholic and living in France I didn't grow up with that. Even after arriving in England I still didn't go. I'm surprised Miss P has never mentioned it either. I really ought to go one year!
Have fun!

Loved this post bertie. I have a thing about fire - I love it so much it slightly worries me! Fantastic that you have reared your own meat in this way. We really hope to move on from ducks and hens to pigs one day too. Have a great night x
Was wondering as I scrolled down if you were preparing a Hugh FW moment! I'm a yank who thinks that Guy Fawkes night is so wonderful and magical. Thanks for keeping it going. Much more interesting than Halloween!
What a brilliant way to use your own pork and sausages and a fitting way to celebrate your pigs wonderful lives with you. Is it a family event or are you charging for the food?
Are you going to repeat it soon. (The piggies that is not the bnonfire!!)

Hope you have a lovely evening on Saturday! X
Have a lovely time Bertie and...

Although I am a bit of a misery when it comes to Fireworks, rather than bonfire night itself. ( I just really believe there should be more laws to protect us all for the mentallers that can buy fireworks) that and I am a right wussy when it comes to big bangs! lol. I do think your party sounds fun. And how great that you can serve up your own homemade sausages and pork. Well done to you and a fitting tribute to all you are trying to acheive.
Hope you have immense fun and bangs!

we enjoy bonfires several times of the year. i like your red pot on the ground nearby.
have a wonderful time..... how marvellous to be able to feed people with meat that you produced from happy pigs...nothing better
wow - your garden is big! Looks like it is going to be a wicked night and I love how you are using your own reared meat to feed people.
I can't believe the rite of passage for the pigs has come and gone - I remember clearly when you first got them. How long did you have them in total? Was it hard saying goodbye or did it go okay? Will you be doing it again next year? Gosh i bet you have lots of meat for the forthcoming year now. Well done on you for doing it and seeing it through! Gosh I wish I could come to your party! :) xxxx
How wonderful - I can't remember the lat time I went to a bonfire party. My fingers are crossed for a dry, still evening for you.
I love that your guests are being treated to home-reared food. How did rearing the pigs stack up in terms of costs compared to what you could buy at the shops?
I'm trying to persuade hubby to do the decent thing and rear our own but he's being squeamish about it. He won't even hear of us rearing meat chickens, yet he'll happily scoff chicken from all manner of sources raised under some pretty dubious conditions.
He really doesn't see that it's a kindness to rear your own...
Hope your party went with a bang and delicious bangers. Good for you, I've got Hugh's book too but no animals to eat so I'm doing my best in pestering local butchers over free range/organic meat!
Love your spotty enamel pot btw.
